Through my weight loss journey, I learned valuable lessons like Patience, Persistence, Self-Discipline, Resilience, Self-Awareness, and Mindset Shifts. There were also the very practical lessons:
Goal Setting and Planning: I know. Even considering – argh! You’ve tried so many times and for so long that the idea of goals can create a visceral response.
Let’s back it up – what about for today? If you’re feeling frisky, maybe for this week? Overplaying this is self-sabotage as we set a goal too high for where we are. It seems too hard or too far away or too frustrating.
Fair enough. Can you do it just for today?
Think about what it would take to lose half or one pound this week. For half a pound a week, skip that power bar or the curly fries, maybe a Grande special coffee today. What small amount can you leave off today? Do tomorrow TOMORROW. Manage today.
Health Awareness: In addition to all the health things they tell us about certain foods, how do foods make you feel? Do they make you feel bloated, achy, tired, or moody?
After I found what worked for my body, Mr. Jones saw a noticeable difference in me. I wasn’t so cranky or moody. Food affects not only the size of our bodies but also our chemistry. Experiment a bit.
What foods affect your thinking, feeling, and outlook?
Social Support: We are social creatures – even introverts like me. We do well with encouragement from family, friends, and formal challenges. This is why people do well in teams as we depend on each other to succeed.
Who’s on your team? Who do you give permission to encourage you? Who gets to hold you accountable to what you say you want? To help you figure out how to make something work? Support systems help us achieve our goals. Without them, it’s less successful and decidedly less fun.
Extra lessons:
Cheating is never helpful: It’s self-sabotage, and it’s never a good idea.
Fast is seldom effective long-term: Slow and steady is the most effective way to change your habits and lifestyle.
Yes, you can lose pounds quickly through various methods, but the body will balance it out at some point to avoid other complications. Consistently good choices create a lifestyle with fewer side effects.
The thing is, weight loss isn’t just about losing the pounds in the end. It’s an opportunity for personal growth, skill development, and utilizing skills from other areas. How can you use your skills to help you move toward yours?
