Emotional Eating: Start With What You WANT

Our puppy, Auggie, will be 4 months old soon.  He’s 30+ pounds of love and a delight, and he is still learning some basic skills like walking on a lead, remembering to tell me when he needs to go out, and indoor behavior.  Your children and grandchildren, maybe great grandchildren, are starting with the basics in the early days of school, refreshing their memory and discovering many new things. It’s a launching point for the next steps.

We sometimes need to return to the basics of our goals, personal growth, weight loss/maintenance, and health so we can make progress.

If you’re like me, it’s hard to keep moving forward when we don’t focus on it.  It’s just too easy to slip back into old habits, thoughts and mindset, and ways of doing things, isn’t it?  So, let’s start at the beginning:

What do you want?

Who do you want to be?

What shift or change would help you get there?

We need to be specific – with a size or number for weight loss, with the specific habit or thought we want to change, with what reaching our goal will look like.  Where there is no vision, we perish, mostly because it’s so airy that we can’t really get our minds around it.  It’s not quite tangible enough, yet it’s something we want or feel we need.

Maybe you want to lose a certain number of pounds by a specific date.

Maybe you want to break a habit like how you respond to frustration or anxiety.

Maybe you want to stop feeling “less than” or like an impostor.

Maybe you want to stop beating up on yourself and instead speak more kindly to yourself.

A few years ago for Lent, I chose to focus on helping my heart heal from some old emotional baggage.  I knew I’d need some help processing it, but it would change so much for me if I’d just sort that out.  Not easy but worth it.  I chose some thought ruts I wanted to change, some beliefs to challenge, and some outcomes I wanted to see.  I wanted to feel better, to have those intrusive thoughts less often – and know what to do when they crept in.

What outcomes would you like to see?

That’s where we begin.  If you’d like to talk it through, or if you’re at your wits’ end on this and don’t care enough to work on it – but want to, email me at [email protected]
