Conquer Turkey Day: 6 Strategies for Thanksgiving Feasts

Video

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday.  My great-grandmother set it as the time when all of her seven living children and their families up to four generations would gather on the Wednesday evening and stay until Friday.  Think industrial-sized pans of food.  Yes, we made it all, thankful for it, joyful amidst it, and giggling through all the mishaps while reconnecting with those for whom we are most grateful.

Feast days are fun, yet if you want to stay on track or just do as little damage to your plan as possible, here are some strategies:

Pre-Planning – do not skip breakfast.  I don’t know about you, but when I let myself get too hungry before a meal, I’m more likely to over-fill my plate.  A protein snack helps stave off hunger.  Salty and sweet snacks tend to increase hunger.

A Walk:  My neighborhood has a Turkey Trot every year. I’m not a runner, but I do enjoy a good walk before the meal.  Fresh air and movement can boost your mind, heart, and body, which can reduce cravings.  A walk afterward can help with digestion.

Portion Control – do a reconnaissance round of the offerings so you know what you want, and gauge portions according to what you know your body can manage.

Build in Samplings – Foods that are meaningful for you are kind of the point, right?  I have my grandmother’s recipe for dressing.  It’s a key flavor of the holiday, so I always have a sample of it.  We tend to only taste the first three bites of any food, so savor them from the appetizers through to dessert.

Focus – focus on the family and friends more than the food.  I love a really good conversation, a good laugh, and connection.   It’s filling in a whole different way, so enjoy connecting with those who share your table.

Give Yourself Some Grace – It’s one meal.  Return to your plan at the next meal or day.  No guilt or shame as they tend to kick up our need for soothing.

I’m grateful for each of you, what I’ve learned from you, experiencing a bit of life with you, and getting to know your heart.  It’s a precious gift.  Happy Thanksgiving!
