Are you constantly finding yourself doing anything but the task you know you should be tackling? You’re not alone. That space between what you intend to do and what you actually accomplish is called the “intention gap” – and learning to bridge it is a game-changer for your productivity and peace of mind.
To cross this bridge, start with identifying what’s really happening when you can’t seem to move forward. Is it deeper than simple procrastination?
- Is there a value misalignment between this task and what you truly care about?
- Do you question your capability to complete it successfully?
- Are you experiencing fear, impostor syndrome, or rejection anxiety?
Once you identify the real obstacle, you’ve already begun resolving the conflict that’s keeping you stuck. In practical terms, create a specific plan to address the resistance.
Step 1: Be honest about what’s feeding your resistance
What specific behaviors are contributing? Maybe it’s endless social media scrolling, hitting snooze repeatedly, poor planning, or needing deadline pressure to motivate you.
If you’re feeling defensive about a particular habit right now – that’s likely your culprit. Our resistance often feels like Gollum from Lord of the Rings: “We wants it, we needs it. Must have the precious!” The hard question is this: Is that really who you want to be?
Your action item: Write down ONE thing you could STOP doing. Hear me: ONE thing. Upping the ante is a common trick of self-sabotage. Focus on just one change, and see how that affects your progress. Think of it like unclogging a drain – remove the main blockage, and everything else flows more freely.
Next week: We’ll add more planks to your bridge over the intention gap.
